Bronchiectasis is a serious lung infection caused by damage to the lungs airways that affects their ability to clear out mucus. After the damage in lungs airways, mucus builds up and bacteria begin to grow. The condition may occur at any age and may last for a long period. The major causes for Bronchiectasis may be due to cystic fibrosis, immune deficiency, inhalation of a foreign object into lungs, inhalation of harmful chemicals and recurrent aspiration of fluid into lungs.
Some of the symptoms of Bronchiectasis:
- Constant cough and sputum production
- Blood-streaked sputum associated with acute infection
- Wheezing
- Fever and weakness
- Fatigue and weight loss
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult a doctor if you have signs persistent cough with sputum. The treatment may include antibiotics and chest physiotherapy; you may be hospitalized for severe cases.
