Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) occurs when the median nerve that runs from the forearm into the palm of the hand is pressed or squeezed at the wrist. Sometimes, thickening from irritated tendons or other swelling narrows the tunnel and causes the median nerve to be compressed resulting pain, weakness or numbness in the hand and wrist. The disorder is likely due to a congenital predisposition and other contributing factors include trauma or injury to the wrist. Women are three times more likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome compared to men. The treatment can be surgical or non-surgical depending on the condition of the syndrome.

Consult a doctor if you have signs of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The wrist is examined for tenderness, swelling, warmth and discoloration. Few tests may be conducted to diagnose the severity of the condition.
