Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH) is benign increase in size of the prostate. It is also called Benign enlargement of the prostate (BEP), adenofibromyomatous hyperplasia and benign prostatic hypertrophy. BPH involves an increase in a number of cells as well as growth in the size of the individual cells called hyperplasia and hypertrophy respectively. In few cases, BPH causes the bladder to block making it impossible or extremely hard to urinate. This would lead to bladder infections or stones or kidney damage.
Some of the symptoms of the benign prostatic hypertrophy:
The symptoms are classified as storage or voiding.
Voiding symptoms:
- Poor urine flow
- Hesitancy
- Intermittent stream
- Dribbling
- Poor bladder emptying sensation
- Episodes of neat retention
Storage Symptoms:
- Frequency of urine
- Urgency to urinate
- Nocturnal incontinence
- Urge incontinence
- Nocturia
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult a doctor if you have signs of BPH that are worrying and creating discomfort in daily life. The medical treatment is suggested and in chronic and severe cases, the doctor may suggest for surgery.
