Premature ovarian failure (POF), otherwise known as primary ovarian insufficiency, represents the loss of normal functioning of the ovaries before the age of 40. When the ovaries fail, normal amount of estrogen is not produced and hence eggs are not released regularly which ends up in infertility. Women with POF will have occasional or irregular periods and will never entirely deter the pregnancy whereas premature menopause stops periods and deters pregnancy. As a result of low estrogen, osteoporosis affects women, in such cases, they are administered with restoring estrogen therapies.

Symptoms of POF:
Mostly primary ovarian insufficiency and menopause symptoms are similar. The most common symptoms of POF are night sweats, vaginal dryness, decreased libido, pain during sex, troubled sleeping and irritability.

Premature ovarian failure treatments:
Calcium & Vitamin D supplements: Since POF affects women bone there should be enough calcium supplements apart from regular foods. The doctor may prescribe the supplements and doses after checking the patient’s blood sample.

Estrogen therapy: It prevents women from hot flashes and osteoporosis. Though the hormone therapy helps women in many ways, the long time consumption results in breast cancer and heart problems among older women whereas in younger women some of the potential risks are observed.

Some couples follow the pregnancy through In vitro fertilization. It is otherwise called artificial insemination. It is the process of combining egg and sperm in the laboratory using Petri dish and once the egg is matured the embryo is transferred into the woman’s uterus. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is potential for the following:
  • Genetical disorder
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Decreased sperm and decreased motility in men
  • Women with fibroids, ovulation disorders, and premature ovarian failure
  • Women who have been removed with fallopian tubes

IVF procedure:
First of all stimulation drugs or fertility drugs are given to the woman to boost the egg production. Then a minor surgery is performed to retrieve the egg. The retrieved egg is infused with the sperm. When the egg matures as an embryo, it is placed in the woman’s womb 3-5 days after egg retrieval and the patient is monitored till the pregnancy. Thus woman gets blessed with a child through IVF procedure.
