What is IVF treatment?

Before the doctors suggest you to go for the IVF treatment to conceive it is very important to understand what exactly IVF is and how the process works for the couples who are facing fertility issues.

IVF is simply a process where the women’s egg and the man’s sperms are fertilized outside the human body. The whole process in performed in the medical laboratories under the proper supervision of the doctors. The word ‘in-vitro’ is a Latin word that means ‘inside a glass’ & its related to all the medical process that our performed outside the human body.

History

The whole process began in 1977 when a couple named Lesley Brown and John Brown were tired trying for a baby for 9 long years but Lesley couldn’t conceive because of her blocked fallopian tubes. It was then Lesley decided to undergo an experimental IVF procedure lead by Dr. Robert Edwards and Dr. Patrick Steptoe.

She luckily conceived at the very first attempt and gave birth to a baby girl Louise Joy Brown in 1978. The baby was all fit and healthy and weighed 5 pounds, 12 ounces at the time of the birth. Louise Joy Brown is also known as the 1st test tube baby.

The discovery of IVF was a huge success and had given hope to thousands of couples who were facing difficulties in conceiving.

IVF Process

Now let us understand how the whole process of IVF works. The process begins with providing the hormones to the woman to stimulate her ovaries. These hormones help ovaries to produce more than 1 egg per cycle.

Then the eggs are collected and fertilized with the sperms. This leads to the formation of an embryo. The embryo is then kept in the incubator for atleast 4-5 days before it could be transferred to the women’s uterus. Once the embryo is transferred, the implantation takes place & the pregnancy begins.
