RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS AS THE WORD ITSELF SAYS IS A TYPE OF ARTHRITIS WHERE MULTIPLE JOINTS (BOTH SMALL AND LARGE) GET INVOLVED RESULTING IN PAIN, SWELLING FOLLOWED BY VARIOUS TYPE OF DEFORMITIES (THIS THE WORST PHASE OF THE DISEASE BECAUSE IT HAMPERS THE PATIENT FROM DOING DAILY ROUTINE ACTIVITIES).

PAIN IS EXPERIENCED WITH ALMOST EVERY TIME THE PATIENT ATTEMPTS TO USE HER /HIS JOINTS. (i.e While sitting, standing, lying down, combing, holding objects or even when she / tries to write or eat). AT THIS STAGE OF THE DISEASE STILL THE PATIENTS WITH HELP OF OVER-THE- COUNTER ANALGESIC MEDICATION CAN DO DAY TO DAY ACTIVITIES AND CAN LIVE A SOME WHAT PAINFUL- NORMAL ROUTINE LIFE. PROBLEM COMES AT A LATER STAGE( IF NOT TREATED) WHEN THE DEFORMITIES SETS IN AND EVEN THE ANALGESICS ARE OF NO HELP. NOW THE PATIENTS START BECOMING DEPENDENT ON OTHER MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY AND THIS DEPENDENCY BECOMES MORE AND MORE WITH THE INCREASING DEFORMITIES - REASON WHERE MAJORITY OF PATIENTS BECOME DEPRESSED AND START TO LOSE HOPE.

RA - IS THERE ANY EFFECTIVE TREATMENT?

Ans - YES

Few decades back treatment of RA was not much effective as of now.
AT PRESENT WE HAVE SEVERAL SAFE DRUGS WHICH CAN CURB THE WHOLE DISEASE PROCESS ITSELF ONCE STARTED AT AN EARLY STAGE OF THE DISEASE.

SO ITS VERY IMPORTANT FOR THE PATIENTS TO CONSULT  A RHEUMATOLOGIST AT A VERY EARLY STAGE AS ONCE THE DEFORMITY SETS IN, NOTHING MUCH IS LEFT TO BE DONE.

RA - SHOULD WE BE CONCERNED ABOUT IT AND WHY?

YES, ANY ONE WHO HAS FOR HIMSELF / HERSELF OR ANY NEAR & DEAR ONE OR IN NEIGHBORHOOD SUFFERING FROM THIS DISEASE SHOULD CONSULT A    RHEUMATOLOGIST BEFORE IT'S GET TOO LATE -  -  BECAUSE

  1. IT CAN OCCUR IN ANY AGE GROUP. BUT, FEMALES OF AGE 35 - 50 YRS ARE MORE PRONE TO HAVE IT.
  2. EARLIER THE DISEASE IS DIAGNOSED AND TREATED, LESSER WILL BE THE DEFORMITY AND HEALTHIER WILL BE THE LIFE.
  3. IT NOT ONLY AFFECTS THE JOINTS BUT ALSO OTHER SYSTEMS OF OUR BODY LIKE - LUNGS, LIVER, HEART, NERVOUS SYSTEM, SKIN, BLOOD, EYE.

It is a chronic inflammatory rheumatic disorder that primarily affects the axial skeleton. Sacroiliitis is its hallmark, and is accompanied by inflammation of the entheses  (which are the points of union between tendon, ligament, or capsule and bone) and formation of syndesmophytes, leading to spinal ankylosis in later stages.

  • Patient usually complains of pain and stiffness over back especially in morning.
  • It may be localized to lower back initially, but later on it spreads to other part of spine.
  • Patient may experience pain, uneasiness and difficulty in sleeping.
  • a Dull aching mild to moderate intensity pain is also present either on one or both sides of buttocks.
  • It may be preceded or followed by pain and swelling in and around lower limb joints.

This is a multisystem disorder occurring predominantly in female at child bearing age group. It involves mainly Skin (Rash), joints, kidney, brain, respiratory. Early diagnosis is must as renal involvement is the main culprit for the miserable life.

  • Gout  is a disorder characterized by severe pain in single or multiple joints.
  • Most common joint to involve is the base of Great Toe but any joint can be involved.
  • Generally males are affected more than females.
  • It is treatable with diet, lifestyle modification and Medicines.
