Advances in oncology:

The files of oncology has undergone a revolution of its kind in the last quarter, this has been possible due to technological advancements as well as quality research in fields of molecular biology as well as drug development

With the various advances, at least in some cancers, we have been able to make them into a chronic disease like BP, Diabetes, where patient lives with the disease while being on treatment with a good quality of life e.g. advanced breast cancer.
But even today the key to cure in cancer remains early detection and treatment

A few of the advances are enumerated in the respective specialties of oncology:
1. Surgical field: Modern day surgery has become less morbid, more and more conservative
a classical example being breast cancer surgery where earlier days the entire breast plus axillary nodes were removed causing a lot of de moralising and decrease or loss of femininity
but in today's era we have been able to achieve same results by either doing breast conserving surgery where only the diseased portion of breast is removed or doing reconstruction so that the contour can be restored to as normal as pre surgery status thus restoring the femininity and confidence of that woman
Similarly more and more cancer surgeries are now being done by laparoscopic methods which decrease the stay and overall morbidity of these patients. A major breakthrough has also been robotic surgery in selected patients which is technically far advanced and very precise though it involves a great deal of learning experience
2. Radiation: A major concern few years ago was toxicity associated with radiation due to dose being given to adjacent normal structures. For example radiation to tongue and neck region invariably caused lot of radiation ebbing given to food pipe causing difficulty swallowing and mouth ulcers Today with advent of modern day radiation machines (Linear Accelerator) with sophisticated software and techniques like IMRT, IGRT, the radiation dose can be focused on organ of concern at the same time decreasing damage to nearby vital organs and structures.
Another major breakthrough has been the cyber knife in the field of radiation although its indications are still expanding and availability is limited to a few centers in India
3. Chemotherapy: Modern day chemotherapy has become very effective at the same time less toxic. Most of the cancer chemo therapies are now a day care affair where in patient comes in the morning and is discharged by evening. Most of the side effects like nausea, vomiting, extreme weakness are now a rarity with advent of good supportive care medicine
Another big breakthrough has been targeted therapy where in a particular drug targets a particular protein over expressed in that particular cancer. The normal cells do not over express this protein thus toxicity to normal cells is minimal. Many drugs in this category are already approved and being used in treatment of various cancers and many more are in pipeline
