Age-Related Macular Degeneration is a condition that leads to loss of vision among people of 50 years or more. Macula is a small spot near the center of retina that is vital for sharp and central vision which allows us to see objects that are straight ahead. AMD damages macula, it makes the vision blur, distorted or dark.
Not everyone will develop Macular Degeneration. AMD is slow in some people, the vision loss is slow and it progresses faster in some cases leading to vision loss in one or both eyes. Age is the major risk in AMD but smoking and family history may also increase the risk of Macular Degeneration. AMD occur in 3 stages: Early AMD, Intermediate AMD, and Late AMD.
Some of the symptoms of Age- related Macular Degeneration:
- Blurriness in vision
- Dark areas or distortion in central vision
- Trouble in recognizing faces
- Hazy vision
- Colors appear less bright
