Alopecia is a condition where hair loss occurs in some or all areas of the body, usually from the scalp. It causes bald spots on the scalp, so it is also called spot baldness. Alopecia areata is due to immune system disorder that affects hair follicles. It equally attacks men and women. Alopecia begins when clusters of hair fall resulting in smooth bald patches on the scalp.
