Articulation disorders can simply be called as Artic disorders or phonetic disorders. Articulation Disorder is a speech disorder where an individual finds difficulty in producing speech sounds. The disorder in speech may be classified generally in the following categories: Omissions of certain sounds, adding extra sounds to some intended word, changing the sounds of the intended words and substituting one or more sounds with some syllable. Artic disorder may produce incorrect sounds due to imprecise placement, timing, pressure, speed or flow of movement of the lips, tongue or throat. Some of the factors that may cause articulation or phonetic disorders are: genetic syndrome, developmental disorders, neurological disorders, cleft palate, hearing loss and illness.
Some of the symptoms of Articulation Disorders:
- Omission of some sounds
- Distortion or irregular sounds
- Substitution of wrong spellings
- Addition of extra letters
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult an Audiology & Speech therapist if you notice signs of artic disorder. The disorder can be rectified by proper treatment.
