Biliary Colic is steady or irregular pain in the upper abdomen, usually below the right side of the rib cage. The pain is due to the blockage of bile in gallbladder, bile is a fluid that helps in digesting fats. Gallstones are the common reason for biliary colic, which blocks the normal flow of bile. Cystic duct is also a major cause of biliary colic and the people with family history, female sex, pregnancy, parity, obesity, oral contraceptives, diabetes mellitus, cirrhosis, rapid weight loss, prolonged fasting, ileal disease and gallbladder emptying are at high risk for the disorder.
Some of the symptoms of Biliary Colic:
- Pain or pressure in the upper abdomen
- Pain may spread back towards the right shoulder blade
- Nausea
- Vomiting
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult a doctor if you have signs of sudden pain or pressure in the upper abdomen that last for long. The doctor may suggest some test and medication.
