Bladder incontinence is the unintentional loss of urine resulted by inability to hold urine due to loss of voluntary control over muscles around the urine tube opening. Pregnancy and childbirth can affect the conditioning of pelvic muscles. This may be the result of damage to the nerves that control bladder, moving of urethra & bladder during pregnancy and due to an episiotomy.
Some of the symptoms of bladder incontinence in pregnancy:
- Inability to hold urine for a long time
- Pain during urination
- Discoloration of urine in pink, red or dark colour
- Urine odor
- Abdomen or back pain
- Frequent urination
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult a doctor immediately if you have signs of bladder incontinence during pregnancy. You may be given medication or treatment for bladder retraining.
