Boils are bumpy red pus-filled lumps that are developed in the hair follicle or oil gland. A boil is also called furuncle. It is usually caused by infection by the bacterium called staphylococcus aureus. Boils are developed by accumulation of pus and dead tissue. They can infect any organ in the body, less severe boils may be cured by themselves, but the severe ones would need antibiotic medication. Carbuncle, Cystic acne, Hidradenitis suppurative, pilonidal cyst, and stye are few types of boils.
Some of the symptoms of Boils:
- The skin around the boil becomes red, painful and swollen
- Fever
- Lymph nodes swollen in the area
- More boils may appear around the original one
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult a doctor if you have signs of boils that are painful. The doctor may suggest some antibiotics if the infection is severe.
