Breast cancer recurrence is the comeback of breast cancer after initial treatment. Breast cancer reappearing in the same area is called recurrence or local recurrence if spread to other parts of the body is called metastasis or distant recurrence. The symptoms of metastasis may include shortness of breath, weight loss and bone pain. Mostly, the recurrences may occur in the first three to five years after initial treatment.
Some of the symptoms of breast cancer recurrence:
- A new lump in your breast
- Changes in skin of the breast area
- Nipple discharge
- Painless nodules on or under the skin of the chest wall
- Skin inflammation in the affected area
- Redness of the area
When should you consult a doctor
Consult a doctor if you have signs of cancer recurrence after the breast cancer treatment has ended. Any symptom that worries you after initial breast cancer treatment, you should approach the doctor.
