Bullous lung disease indicates the presence of bullae which are abnormal airspaces resulting in the destruction of normal airspace wall tissue. The disorder may be due to familial occurrence and mostly associated with emphysema. Bullae lung disease occurs in 3 types: Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3.
Bullous lung disease Type 1 is originated in a sub pleural location usually in the upper part of the lung with anarrow neck produces a passive atelectasis of adjacent lung tissue. Type 2 is superficial in location having very broad neck, contains blood vessels and strands of partially destroyed lung. Type 3 lies deep within lung substance contains residual strands of lung tissue.
Some of the symptoms of bullous lung disease:
- Enlarge progressively over a period of time
- Prone to infection or lead to pneumothorax
- Associated with Emphysema
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult a doctor if you have signs of bullous lung disorder. The larger bullae may need surgical procedure for removal.
