A Cervical Rib is an extra rib that forms above the normal first rib, that grows from the base of the neck above the collarbone. This condition is present from the birth but is not noticed until later in the life. A cervical rib can sometimes squash one of the nearest blood vessels or nerves causing problems such as neck pain and numbness in the arm. These symptoms are collectively called Thoracic outlet syndrome. Thoracic outlet syndrome is more common in women than in men. People whose jobs involve repetitive movements or in sports people whose have lot of arm movement.
Some of the symptoms of Cervical Rib:-
- Pain in the shoulder and neck that spreads into the arm
- Unable to carry fine hand movements
- Swelling in the affected arm
- A blood clot in the subclavian artery
- Weakness or tingling in the affected arm and fingers
When should you consult a doctor?
Consult a doctor if you have signs of Cervical Rib. The doctor would diagnose and the treatment depends on the severity of the condition. Physiotherapy may be suggested in mild cases and surgery may advised in moderate to severe cases.
