Lactating women produce 850 ml of milk daily, which is the equivalent of 600 kcal (2.5 MJ). With 80% efficiency food energy into milk, a mother needs an additional 750 kcal (3.1 MJ) daily or 130,000 kcal (550 MJ) during six months of lactation. About 25 g extra protein and other essential nutrients are recommended for the well being of mother and child.

Pregnancy Diet program

A 3.2 kg full – term infant is born with about 300 ml blood, 500 g proteins, 30 g calcium, 15 g phosphorus, and about 300 – 400 mg iron . All these are drawn from the mother. Additional dietary demands on the mother are:

(i) a 20% - 25% increase in basal metabolism in the later stages of pregnancy

(ii) formation of the placenta

(iii) blood loss during parturition

The diet of the mother should be adequate to supply the above requirements and reduces the risk of complications during pregnancy.
