Dr. BK Sundar

Dr. BK Sundar is a Consultant Physician in Karnataka, who has been practising at the BKS Hospital in Bellary since August 2004. A year after obtaining the MBBS and MD degrees from Gulbarga University, he went to the UK, where he studied and trained at several hospitals between September 1998 and November 2002, receiving the title of Member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in 2001.

In the UK Dr. Sundar served as Observer in the Department of Medicine at Neath General Hospital in West Glamorgan. He then was posted as Senior House Officer at two hospitals, the Sunderland Royal Hospital in Sunderland and the Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester until November 2001. His next assignment was as Specialist Registrar (LAT) in Medicine/Cardiology at the South Tyneside District General Hospital in South Shields.

On return from the UK, Dr. BK Sundar taught for 18 months, designated as Lecturer in Medicine at Vijaynagar Institute of Medical Sciences, Bellary. He taught undergraduates and postgraduates, conducting classes, bedside clinics and ward rounds. He performed regular echocardiograms in the medical college hospital and also started induction programmes for fresh interns. After teaching for a year and a half, he moved into full-time private practice in 2004 at the BKS Hospital, where he has been till date.

Dr. Sundar and the rest of the team at BKS regularly deal with outpatients, where chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, stroke, pulmonary tuberculosis and COPD are followed up. Patients are also screened for diabetes and a number of new-onset diabetes mellitus cases are detected. The hospital also runs an educational programme for diabetics. There is a diabetic foot care clinic in the hospital too and patients are routinely advised about the importance of foot care, diet and exercise in diabetes. The hospital is well equipped and the staff well-trained to routinely handle medical emergencies and malfunctions such as acute myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndrome, exacerbation of chronic obstructive lung disease, arrhythmia, venous thromboembolism, acute stroke (CVA), gastroenteritis and acute respiratory failure. The in-house ICU is also equipped to treat high-risk sepsis and ventilated patients.

Dr. Sundar is proficient in procedures such as lumbar puncture, pleural paracentesis, abdominal paracentesis and central line insertions. He also carries out temporary pacemaker insertions, pericardiocentesis and diagnostic coronary catherterisations (coronary angiograms). Dr. Sundar is also well-versed in performing adult echocardiograms and conducting treadmill tests. At the BKS Hospital, a weekly cath lab programme is run, wherein visiting interventional cardiologists perform percutaneous coronary interventions (angioplasty).

Dr. Sundar keeps himself abreast with current practices in medicine by regularly attending continuing medical education programmes (CMEs), and national and international conferences. He is also regularly invited to deliver guest lectures and is a respected member of numerous professional medical associations.
