Dr. Bijaya Kumar Mishra is a Bhubaneswar-based Physician specialising in internal medicine, diabetes, cardiology and respiratory diseases, with over four decades of experience in the medical profession. Besides his MBBS qualification, he has an MD postgraduate degree in General Medicine. He is also a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Medical Sciences and the Indian College of Cardiology. He currently can be consulted at his clinic in Saheed Nagar, and at the Kalinga Hospital in Chandrasekarpur. His areas of professional interest include diabetes mellitus, non-invasive cardiology, hypertension, rheumatology, allergy and asthma, geriatric medicine and critical care medicine.
Dr. Mishra commenced his professional career way back in 1970, and has completed more than twenty years of state government service, having worked as a Specialist in Cardiology at the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar from 1978 to 1980, and then as Specialist in Medicine at the Capital Hospital and Unit IV Zonal Hospital at Bhubaneswar for four years. He subsequently served as Physician to the Honourable Governor of Orissa from 1984 to 1988. He returned to work at the Capital Hospital from 1988 to 1991, before he started working independently at his clinic and the Kalinga Hospital.
Dr. Bijaya Kumar Mishra, has been actively involved as a speaker or chairperson in different academic activities organised by local chapters of various professional associations such as the IMA, API, IRA, IMA-AMS, ISCCM, CSI, etc, as well as technical meetings organised by pharmaceutical companies and local hospitals. In addition, he attends regular continuing medical education (CME) programmes and update sessions organised at different medical colleges of Orissa. He has also organised many health camps in urban and remote rural areas of Orissa in co-ordination with voluntary organisations and conducted several public awareness programmes through audio-visual aids, on medical topics of public interest including diabetes, hypertension, smoking and asthma.
As an office-bearer of several associations, Dr. Mishra has contributed significantly from the different positions he has led from. As President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Bhubaneswar branch, he has been credited with overseeing the approval, acquiring of land and construction of the Bhubaneswar IMA Institute Building. His tenure also witnessed a record increase in the number of affiliated life members of the local arm of the association. As State IMA-AMS Chairman, he was instrumental in getting recognition for the state branch at the national level and organised a successful state level conference of IMA-AMS at Bhubaneswar. He led the initiative to launch the quarterly IMA Orissa newsletter to facilitate better communication between members at the state and national level. In addition, he was also involved in the process of creating the Bhubaneswar City Chapter of the Association of Physicians of India.
Through his long career, Dr. Bijaya Kumar Mishra has had a professional vision, wherein he has endeavoured to improve health care facilities, coupled with keeping the medical fraternity continuously updated, thereby achieving standardisation of care while adhering to ethics-based medicine. He strives to work towards goals that include increasing awareness on health problems through meetings, press and media, etc, propagating healthy life styles for the public. He has regularly been involved in health promotion activities in his village and at the panchayat level.
