Dr. Madhukar Rai is an experienced and accomplished Professor of Medicine and Physician specialising in Medicine (Infectious Diseases) and Endocrinology. He is currently designated as Professor and HOD - Department of Medicine, at the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi, an Institute that he has been associated with throughout his career, right from time he entered the medical field as a student.
After completing his MBBS in 1989, Dr. Rai went on to do his MD in General Medicine in 1989 followed by a DM in Endocrinology in 1991, all from BHU. He excelled in academics and received several certificates of proficiency for his performance in the MBBS exams. Dr. Madhukar Rai has gained much knowledge and expertise over the years by attending a large number of training programmes, workshops, conferences and symposia in India and abroad.
In November 2005 Dr. Rai attended a programme under the Arthur Ashe Endowment for the Defeat of AIDS, at New York Presbyterian Hospital - Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York. Earlier, he underwent training in Flow Cytometry at the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, USA) in 2003, and in Molecular DNA techniques at Cambridge Institute of Medical Research (Cambridge, UK) in 2002.
Dr. Rai is a respected teacher as well as research guide/mentor for a number of postgraduate and doctoral students. He has moved up from Lecturer in November 1992, to Senior Lecturer, Reader and finally Professor (since July 2007). He is in charge of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching for the Department of Medicine at IMS-BHU and also coordinator for all the exams conducted by the department.
Dr. Madhukar Rai has many accomplishments to his name. He was instrumental in developing a state-of the-art Infectious Diseases Research Laboratory in the Department of Medicine at IMS BHU. He has been the Principal Investigator in clinical and lab studies on Leishmaniasis and on many other trials and research projects funded by esteemed organisations such as the National Institute of Health (USA), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (USA), the Infectious Disease Research Institute (USA), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (USA), the European Commission and the World Health Organisation.
Dr. Rai has published over 50 research papers in national and international journals and contributed chapters to textbooks. He is Co-Editor of a book on Paediatric Endocrinology. He has the distinction of having his published articles cited 143 times and a Paper cited in one of the most widely read textbooks of Medicine – Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine 16th Edition, which is published in 15 languages. Dr. Rai has been on the organising committee of several medical conferences and is on the Governing Body of organisations such as the Association of Physicians of India and the Endocrine Society of India.
