Dr. Ghanashyam Biswas

Dr. Ghanashyam Biswas is a full-time Consultant Medical Oncologist and Executive Director at Sparsh Hospitals and Critical Care in Bhubaneswar, Orissa. He is also a Visiting Consultant to the Kalinga Hospital in the same city. While he is familiar with all procedures related to Medical Oncology, he has a special interest in the areas of acute leukaemia, lymphomas and epithelial ovarian cancer.

Dr. Biswas completed his undergraduate and postgraduate medical studies in Orissa. He then moved to Mumbai to study and train for the DM superspeciality degree in Medical Oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH). He received this degree at the beginning of 2005, and also qualified as a European Certified Medical Oncologist (ECMO) at around the same time, passing all of his examinations at first attempt.

While pursuing his MD, Dr. Biswas was stationed as a Medical Officer at the RFWC Public Health Centre in Bolangir, Orissa, and as Junior Resident at the MKCG Medical College, Behrampur. Later, he was resident at the Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research, New Delhi.

As a DM postdoctoral student at Tata Memorial, Dr. Biswas served as Senior Resident in the department of Medical Oncology and also carried out autologous and allogeneic bone marrow transplant (BMT) as part of his training. He visited MDACC in Texas, USA, for a couple of weeks in May 2004 as an observer in the BMT unit; leukaemia and lymphoma services; and, head, neck & thoracic services.

Post-DM, Dr. Biswas continued working as Specialist Registrar at TMH for six months, before he joined as full-time Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Hemlata Hospital and Research Centre in Bhubaneswar from October 2005 until January 2007.

Dr. Ghanashyam Biswas believes that it is possible to make cancer treatment affordable in India, and to this end he has adopted some practices which include accurate and professional patient counselling; a comprehensive patient support system; and, charity-based programmes through the United for Cancer Foundation. He also strives to create awareness about cancer among the general public and among doctors of other specialisations, through CMEs (continuing medical educations programmes) and other events.

Dr. Ghanashyam Biswas has co-authored numerous research papers and articles, many of which have found their way to publication in indexed journals of repute, both national as well as international. Some of these papers have been presented by him or his colleagues at relevant conferences in India and overseas. Dr. Biswas has been involved in teaching too, having taught medical students and junior residents during his residency at MKCG Medical College and Tata Memorial Hospital. He is fluent in English, Hindi, Bengali and Oriya. His leisure-time hobbies include socialising, writing fiction and travelling.
