Dr. Rajarshi Mukhopadhyay

Dr. Rajarshi Mukhopadhyay is a Diabetologist and Endocrinologist based at Durgapur in West Bengal, where he is available for consultation at The Mission Hospital five days a week. He has a string of qualifications to his name, and has studied, trained and practised in India as well as the United Kingdom.

Dr. Mukhopadhyay is currently Senior Consultant (Department of Endocrinology) at The Mission Hospital, where he has been working since November 2012. Prior to this he was Consultant and Associate Professor (Department of Endocrinology) at Prathima Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), for a year. After obtaining the DM degree, he moved to the United Kingdom where he spent more than nine years in different hospitals, gaining extensive experience in the process. Starting off as a Senior House Office (SHO) at the Frimley Park Hospital and the Lincoln County Hospital, he was placed as a Specialist Registrar (Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Medicine) at University Hospital (Leicester), University Hospital (Birmingham), the Walsall Hospitals NHS Trust and Royal Wolverhampton Hospital. He returned to the University Hospital (Birmingham) as Acting-Up Consultant as part of the prevailing rotation system. His last position in the UK, before he returned to India, was that of Consultant (Medicine, Diabetes and Endocrinology) at the University Hospital Durham.

Dr. Mukhopadhyay has been involved in many audit research projects in the UK, which are listed in relevant sections on this website. He has also had articles and papers written by him published in Indian and international indexed journals. He has made several presentations on topics related to his areas of research at various association meets. He has also been active in the area of training, which includes regular teaching of post-graduate and undergraduate medical students both in the UK and India, assessments of junior medical staff and teaching nursing staff the appropriate manner in which to care for diabetic patients. Dr. Rajarshi Mukhopadhyay has also lectured specialist registrars of clinical chemistry of West Midland Deanery, scoring high on trainee feedback.

Research

Research Dissertation (MD - General Medicine): Clinical and Biochemical Profile in Isolated Systolic Hypertensives. It was found that APO-B & APO-A levels both rise in isolated systolic hypertensives though APO-B more than APO-A unlike LDL & HDL.

Research work during the specialisation in Endocrinology and Diabetes: Clinical and Biochemical Profile in PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).

Audit Project: Hypoglycaemia in inpatients of University Hospital Birmingham and its management. Understanding and management of hypoglycaemia by UHB nurses. These two audits highlighted the magnitude of the problem of hypoglycaemia and suggested corrective measures including some changes in the protocol for management of hypoglycaemia (Both these audits were accepted for presentations at the Annual Conference of Diabetes UK).

Audit Project: Audit of Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Walsall Manor Hospital. Here It was found that the most common cause for DKA was non-compliance and following this audit, Walsall Hospital agreed to bring a DKA care pathway.

Audit Project: Audit of Management of Diabetic patients' Re-admissions; Walsall Manor Hospital. Here it was found that the management of diabetic patients was suboptimal and 18% re-admissions were directly related to diabetes.

Audit Project: Audit of Diabetic Foot Ulcer in Foot Clinic of Selly Oak Hospital, UHB. First audit of foot ulcer in Selly Oak that showed level of referral from GPs needs to increase.

Audit Project: Audit of computer generated discharge letter from Lincoln County Hospital. First audit of computer generated discharge letter from MAU which showed it was efficient and quick and liked by GPs.
