Surgical Oncology

Equipped with an integrated surgical suite comprising of 3 general operation theatres, operation theatre for delivery of brachy therapy & a state-of-the-art CSSD. All modern HIPEC & PIPAC procedures are introduced for better treatment and therapy.

Surgery remains the primary treatment in a number of malignancies. Apart from curative removal of the tumour where possible, surgical expertise is often required for diagnosis, follow-up and symptom palliation. The surgical teams aspire to work with the mission of offering high quality evidence-based surgical services. The hospital boasts of an integrated surgical suite comprising of 3 Cancer operation theatres, 1 operation theatre for delivery of brachytherapy and a state-of-the-art CSSD. To facilitate high-volume complex cancer surgery and optimise ambient atmosphere, each theatre is fitted with equipment meeting contemporary standards. This is the ‘Centre of Excellence’ for ‘Peritoneal Cancers’ with well-equipped HIPEC and PIPAC Services. This institution is the first centre to perform the first PIPAC surgery in eastern and north India. This department runs fellowship programme in ‘Surgical Oncology’ with one candidate per session.

Radiation Oncology

Radiation Oncology High End Linear Accelerator by ELEKTA treatment Unit facilitates the administration of high precision radiation therapy targeted at the cancer bearing tissues with minimal collateral damage to adjoining healthy tissues reducing the potential side-effects of radiation. 

One of the three pillars in the treatment of cancer is Radiotherapy. Radiotherapy involves the use of ionizing radiation in an attempt to either cure or improve the symptoms of cancer. The Radiation Oncology Department in Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Cancer Hospital, Kolkata is proud to have state-of-the-art linear accelerator, Elekta Synergy. It is capable of performing all the high end treatments like intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) .

There is facility for brachytherapy for all sites in the form of remote after loading high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy system with a 3D planning facility.The department works in close coordination with surgical oncology,medical oncology and other ancillary services.

We do have a tumor-board facility in which eminent doctors from all the branches e.g. surgical oncology, radiation oncology, medical oncology, radiology, pathology etc. discuss all cases and chalk out the best possible treatment plan according to evidence-based medicine for a particular patient.

Nuclear Medicine

The Therapeutic Nuclear Medicine involves the use of radioactive isotopes administered to the patient for the treatment of cancer or control of cancer symptoms.
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Cancer Hospital have most sophisticated Nuclear Medicine Department to provide all kind of Nuclear Medicine facilities under one roof to the common people at an affordable cost.

• The mainstay of Nuclear imaging at NCRI is its state of art PET-CT Scanner (DISCOVERY) from GE . This is one of the finest PET-CT Scanner in the world for its most sophisticated hardware coupled with outstanding software. Positron emitted tomography (PET) involves molecular imaging with positron emitting radionuclides is playing an increasingly important role in the diagnosis and staging of malignant diseases and monitoring response to therapy . Cancer cells require a great deal of sugar or glucose to have enough to grow. PET scanning utilizes a radioactive molecule that is similar to glucose called FLUORO DEOXY GLUCOSE (FDG), FDG accumulates with malignant cellsbecause of their high rate of glucose metabolism. The CT option makes it possible to produce fusion imaging as CT gives superior anatomical details.

• Dual head gamma camera required for functional imaging. It is used for Bone Scan for determination of Bone metastasis and primary bone tumour, Renal Scan used to detect obstructive uropathy, GFR etc. I-131 Whole body scan for detection of metastasis due to thyroid cancer.

• High Dose I-131 THERAPY unit with two isolation room for cases of thyroid cancer (post surgery)

• We have low dose I-131 facility also.

Haematology

The department of clinical hematology at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Cancer Hospital, offers comprehensive, collaborative and contemporary services to infants, children, adolescents, adults and the elderly. The consultants in the department are highly trained from some of the best institutes in India and abroad. The Hospital has an advanced laboratory with a dedicated team of Hemato-pathologists. Hematology is a specialty responsible for the diagnosis and treatment with problems related to blood (red, white blood cells and platelets) and blood forming tissues (bone marrow), from anemia to blood cancers. Some of the diseases may be genetic in origin and require long term treatment. In cases that need Bone marrow transplantation, the hospital offers the service with a participatory and humane approach. This team offers the latest in technology and expertise to provide cutting edge diagnosis and treatment techniques.

What is palliative care?
Palliative care is specialized medical care for people with serious illness. This type of care is focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family. Palliative care is provided by a specially-trained team of doctors, nurses and other specialists who work together with a patient’s other doctors to provide an extra layer of support. Palliative care is a supportive care that every patient and family should get if they are facing a life-threatening illness.

HIPEC & PIPAC Surgery

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Cancer Hospital is the State of the Art Centre for Peritoneal cancers. This is the first centre to start PIPAC services in eastern India. Our team of surgeons are pioneers in the field. They have vast experience in performing complex cancer surgeries. This team performs over 400-500 major cancer surgeries per year. Laparoscopic Abdominal cancer surgery is another area of expertise of this team.
HIPEC along with CRS (Cytoreductive Surgery) is the only curative option of many abdominal cancers like ovary, appendix,Pseudomyxomaperitonei, Mesothelioma, ca stomach ,ca colon etc. When the disease spreads into peritoneum it indicates bad prognosis. With Cyto Reductive Surgery all the visible cancer cells are taken out then heated chemotherapy is directly given into abdomen (HIPEC) . Since the chemotherapy is given directly into the target area, the effect is higher and side effects are less. 
PIPAC ( PRESSURIZED INTRAPERITONEAL AEROSOL CHEMOTHERAPY) is a procedure where aerosolized chemotherapy is directly injected into abdomen via a high pressure injector. Cancers (from ovary,colon,appendix,stomach) which spread into peritoneum( a membrane which covers inside of abdomen) usually have poor prognosis. Chance of five year survival is almost nil. When the peritoneal spread is high,patients usually die in few months. No fruitful treatment was available for the peritoneal malignancy with high disease load.

Research & Development

The Molecular Biology Department of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Cancer Hospital (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose cancer Research Institute) undertakes biological research with the following broad objectives:

• Understanding the genetic and transcriptomic basis of cancers.

• Therapeutic intervention using phytochemicals and their translational development as anti-cancer drugs.

Ongoing Govt. funded projects:

• Ex – vivo Drug Sensitivity in Breast Cancer Stem cells (BCSs): an Implication for therapy for Treatment Failure Cases in Breast Cancer (ICMR)
  Both fundamental and applied research involving medicinal plants has immense pharmacological significance, especially in the context of challenges associated with conventional chemotherapeutic medicines. This projecthighlights alternative therapeutic strategies in breast cancer and analyses their efficacy in ex-vivo cultured breast cancer stem cells. The project aims to generate knowhow regarding the application of phytomedicines in combination with conventional drugs towards management of treatment resistant breast carcinoma and associated inflammation.

Molecular Laboratory

In our Department we investigate molecular characteristics of solid cancers, especially of the colon, rectum, pancreas and ovaries. Within these studies we focus on the molecular epidemiological level in order :

 1. to identify biomarkers of increased predisposition to tumour diseases,
2. enable early diagnostics,
3. assess individual responses to anti-tumour treatment,
4. determine long-term prognosis

 The Department has been working with different types of biological material from a patients with cancer diseases, such as solid tissue, blood cells or plasma

Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit

The purpose of a stem cell transplant or a bone marrow transplant is to replenish the body with healthy cells and bone marrow when chemotherapy and radiation are finished. After a successful transplant, the bone marrow will start to produce new blood cells. In some cases, the transplant can have an added benefit; the new blood cells will also attack and destroy any cancer cells that survived the initial treatment.

Our Founder Director Dr. Ashis Mukhopadhyay is the pioneer to perform Stem Cell Transplant (both Bone Marrow and Cord Blood Transplantation) in West Bengal as well as Eastern India in the year 2000. . He then started a Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplantation unit in 2002 in our old premises at 16 A Park Lane, Kolkata-700016 with an objective of a cost-effective transplant centre in eastern India to provide the patients of eastern India with the service of various types of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. We have performed 22 transplants successfully in the old premises till the year 2012.

We have recently inaugurated our modern Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit on 22nd January, 2021 on the occasion of Birth anniversary of our beloved Founder and former Director, Dr. Ashis Mukhopadhyay, our Hon’ble Mayor Mr. Firhad (Bobby) Hakim has inaugurated the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit in his name.

Interventional Radiology

Most interventional radiology procedures for cancer require a small incision the size of a pinhole, which reduces pain and your risk for complication in patients. Compared to traditional cancer treatments involving chemotherapy, open surgery, or radiation, interventional radiology also allows for a quicker recovery, as most procedures can be completed in one day. Many patients are discharged the same day of their procedure within 24 hours, getting them back to the life and activities they love faster.

From performing biopsies for cancer diagnosis to alleviating pain and other symptoms through therapeutic procedures, our Interventional Radiology Unit can address a variety of cancer conditions that may have required surgery in the past.

We use Interventional Radiology to reduce or eliminate tumors using radioactive particles, heat, cold, and electric current while minimizing the impact on the surrounding healthy organs. In addition to treating tumors, our compassionate team also work closely with oncologists and surgeons to help minimize discomfort and dramatically improve the quality of life for palliative care patients.

Blood Bank

We are about to commence our own Blood Bank for betterment of our patients. In an oncological hospital like ours blood bank is very necessary. Patients who need blood transfusion regularly can avail the facilities without any delay or hassles.

The Blood Bank will remain open round-the-clock on all days and will be able to meet theemergency needs of the hospital. There will be Blood Component Separation Unit for supplying different components of the blood viz. concentrated RBC, Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP), Platelet concentrate etc. It has become an essential criteria nowadays to supply blood components for safe blood transfusion and also for fulfilling the exact and specific needs of large number of patients requiring transfusion.

Our 24 hrs Pharmacy is well stocked with all type of chemotherapeutic and other advanced drugs for cancer patients. To support patients coming from low income groups the pharmacy have subsidized ratesboth for IPD and OPD patients.

The Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Cancer hospital is dedicated to provide safe and state-of-the-art anesthesia care, pain management and life support for cancer patients.

Comprehensive preoperative assessment, patient optimization before anaesthesia and surgery, careful administration and monitoring of anaesthesia and high quality postoperative care supports in minimizing the risk of major surgery. The department has been constantly upgrading its ability to monitor patients under anaesthesia, deliver postoperative care in surgical ICU and intensive care of critically ill patients in medical ICU.
