wisdom tooth surgery, ignoring oral problems will lead to some serious health problems. Maintaining oral hygiene is utmost necessary to keep you fit and healthy. Many a times you have heard people complaining about their wisdom teeth and the unbearable pain that it causes. There are some who also say that they have been to the dentist and underwent a wisdom tooth surgery. There are many dental clinics in Pune who conduct wisdom tooth surgery.

What exactly is wisdom tooth?

The tooth that appears during a later stage when all the other teeth have been fully developed is known as the wisdom teeth.  Most of your teeth develop during your childhood. There are a few mysterious one which erupt at an age when you are considered to be ‘wiser’. They are also referred to as the third molars and develop at the far inner side of your mouth. Usually two grow on top and two at the bottom. But sometimes the number of wisdom tooth is less or you might end up with not having one. They usually appear between the age group of 16 to 25 and if you can showcase them with pride if they are well aligned.

Why do they need to be removed?

Let us now understand the need for wisdom teeth surgery and why it needs to be removed.

Partial growth of wisdom teeth: As the human civilization evolved the choice of food moved from coarse foods like roots, meat, leaves, etc to softer foods. This resulted in making the wisdom teeth vestigial that is they have become absolutely functionless. More often the wisdom teeth are misaligned and are impacted that is they do not erupt completely but develop partially through the gum line. When they erupt partially cleaning the wisdom teeth becomes very difficult. As a result the food substance gets accumulated around the soft tissue flap which lies beneath it and this eventually leads to the growth of bacteria. This causes infection or a pericoronitis which causes difficulty in opening of mouth, diffuse pain, bad breath, bad taste in mouth, redness and swelling of the gum. If this condition is not treated the infection will aggravate and become more serious.

Misaligned wisdom teeth: Misaligned or crooked wisdom teeth will rub against your cheek or tongue. This causes severe pain and also ulcer. When there isn’t enough space in the mouth or on the jaw due to misalignment of teeth it will cause crowding or displacement of the remaining teeth. In many cases, the teeth which are adjacent to the wisdom teeth are at a greater risk of developing gum problems.

Abnormality in the growth of wisdom teeth- Another problem that arises because of lack of space in the mouth is the abnormality in the growth of the wisdom tooth. As there isn’t enough space for normal growth, the wisdom tooth gets stuck beneath your jaw bone or beneath another tooth or your gum. When the wisdom teeth are misaligned they can also cause the damage of the adjacent tooth’s root or impinge on a nerve.

Formation of cyst: In rare cases they can also lead to the formation of cyst or a fluid filled sac. This also can cause the damage of the adjacent teeth, expansion of the jaw or also cause destruction of your jaw bone. In remote cases there can also be development of tumours in these cysts around the wisdom teeth. This will require the medical intervention of a dentist and also will require a surgical extraction wherein the teeth will be removed.

Non-functional adjacent teeth: In some cases the tooth opposing the wisdom teeth becomes absent and non-functional. It might supra erupt in due course of time and impinge on the opposing jaw. In this case too, wisdom tooth surgery is the best option.

Option to have stem cells: In recent years another reason why many people want to undergo wisdom tooth surgery is because they want to opt to have their stem cells extracted from their wisdom teeth and get it isolated and saved.

In all such cases it is best to visit a dental clinic and take the professional medical help of a dentist.  As you age extraction of the teeth will also become very difficult and the healing time will be longer. There are many prominent dental clinics in Pune like the Oswal Dental and Oral Surgery Clinic who help the patients to overcome this acute dental problem through wisdom tooth surgery.

As the adage goes ‘Prevention is better than cure’. Don’t wait consult your dentist before it is too late.
