3 Health Benefits of Water

Human beings can live for about 20 days without food; but without water, they cannot survive more than 3 days. Such is the important role water plays in the human body. Like every year, this time too March 22nd is being celebrated as World Water Day. Let us use this occasion to know more about the health benefits of water.

Water Flushes Wastes Out

A higher intake of water means better movement of wastes to the kidneys. Although the water cannot destroy toxins, it can facilitate their movement out of the body through the urine. This is why doctors recommend that people who have tiny stones in the urinary tract or an infection of the urinary bladder should consume more water – it helps to flush the waste out. However, people with kidney problems should not increase their water consumption without consulting a doctor.

Water Maintains Electrolyte Balance

Ever noticed how tired you feel when you have diarrhea or vomiting? This is because along with water you also lose valuable electrolytes that play a crucial role in metabolism. Loss of water changes the concentration of electrolytes present in the body and this dehydration is what leads to the feeling of exhaustion.

Water Aids Weight Loss

Water is not a magic cure for weight loss; however, it can help reduce the number of calories you consume. Drinking water before a meal makes you feel fuller and as a result, you eat less and this can cut your calorie intake. Drinking lukewarm water is even better – it is an excellent digestive aid that also cleanses the bowels and reduces flatulence.

Water plays several important roles – it forms a major part of the blood, regulates body temperature and transports nutrients. Extreme heat, strenuous exercise and conditions such as diarrhea and vomiting can cause you to lose a lot of water; make sure you compensate by drinking enough to make up for the loss and stay healthy.
