Just like other parts of the body, lips have a layer of skin which is thin and transparent and making visible the reddish color of blood beneath it.

Dry lips are a common experience for many of us. The extreme weather can be the most common factor. In medical terms they are called chapped lips or cracked lips. Apart from weather, dehydration is also considered a major cause for dry lips. But there can be other reasons like cosmetics, allergy, and medications among others that would cause them to you for a longer duration and make you restless.

1. Allergy:

There maybe something in your surrounding since long of which you are allergic and have caused your lips to be chapped. It can anything from a flower to lipstick that has been catalyst over some time. You need to identify the irritant and get rid of it.

2. Dehydration:

Sudden appearance of dry lips means you are facing dehydration, a situation where your body is losing more fluid than it intakes in a day. You need to consume water, glucose, coconut water, lemon juice and other beneficiary drinks to get rid of them soon.

3. Excessive Intake of Vitamin A:

If you consume 25,000 IU of vitamin A through salads, supplements and other sources, it may be one of the causes of dry lips. You need to consult your nutritionist or family doctor and consider their advice.

4. Anaemia:

Lack of iron in body leads to reduction in the formation of red blood cells. That leads to Anaemia in long term. That anaemia maybe leading to dry lips.

5. Kawasaki Disease:

It is a rare disease in children occurring due to inflammation of blood vessels including arteries and veins. That can cause dry lips in children.

6. Autoimmune Disease:

Autoimmune disease may cause your lips to become sensitive to the sun, heat, humidity, and thus causing dry lips.

7. Vitamin B Deficiency:

Lack of Vitamin B, especially B2, may be a major cause of dry lips. It causes reduction in iron, zinc and other important elements in our bodies. Consumption of egg, dairy products, apple, bananas, spinach, mustard greens and sprouts needs to be consumed to overcome this deficiency, thus overcoming the problems of dry lips.

8. Licking Your Lips:

When you face dry lips, you tend to lick them? You think you will moist them and try to make it normal. But you do it repetitively. You are just inviting trouble and not solving anything. The saliva you dispose at dry lips from your tongue evaporates soon and causes further dehydration as your body excludes the fluids in form of saliva. You need to control this habit and come up with better remedies.

9. Mouth Breathing:

When you inhale and exhale through your mouth, for whatever reason (cold, snore), the air will dry up the lips. It is better to keep the lips moisture throughout the day.
