The Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences, or NIMS as it is very popularly known as, is one of the premier hospitals in the country. NIMS is a premier institution and an autonomous university located in Hyderabad. It was established in 1980 under the Act of Andhra Pradesh State Legislature and it has campuses at Punjagutta in Hyderabad and Bibinagar, about 50 kms from Hyderabad.
The Institute which is recognized by the University Grants Commission and Medical Council of India is located at Punjagutta - a prime area of the twin cities - and spread over an area of about 23 acres. The Institute operates through 28 departments, of which, 14 are Super Specialties. The Institute has a bed strength of 985, of which 684 are located in the General Wards, 117 in private rooms, and 184 in emergency and post operative care.
The Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences was established under the state act and meant to function for patient care and training in postgraduate degrees, graduate and degree diplomas in Medical, Paramedical and Nursing faculties. While it also functions as a Referral Hospital, the primary objectives of the institute are to create a center of excellence for providing medical care, educational and research facilities of the highest order in the field of medical sciences including Continuing Medical Education and Hospital Administration.
