Herbs have been found to contain natural compounds that help alleviate nerve pain. One such compound is L-Tetrahydropalmatine. This is an alkaloid found in a herb called corydalis and is usually important in Traditional Chinese medicine. This alkaloid usually affects nerve receptors, reducing their sensitivity to pain. Another natural compound that is effective in reducing nerve pain is L-Theanine. This is an amino acid that is found in tea leaves, and tests show that it can reduce stress, boost moods and cognitive performance when taken by patients with nerve disorders. Another important compound is salicin, which can be acquired from white willow bark. This compound has a chemical similar to aspirin, although in this case, it does not damage the gastrointestinal tract as synthetic aspirin does. It also contains useful flavonoids which help reduce inflammation and pain.
2. Dietary Changes
Dietary changes are also effective in alleviating nerve pain. This is especially important for patients suffering from multiple sclerosis and peripheral neuropathy. It is known that an unhealthy diet is most likely to cause pain and illness and therefore individuals should take a critical look at what they consume to keep nerve pain at bay. Common culprits that enhance nerve pain are foods like corn, dairy, soy and those rich in gluten and sugar. Diabetes is a leading cause of peripheral neuropathy and therefore diabetes patients should eat foods that lower their blood sugar levels to ease symptoms or even prevent peripheral neuropathy. GSHS encourages patients suffering from neuropathy to consume foods rich in fiber and low on simple carbohydrates. They should also take foods rich with antioxidants like fish and blueberries, foods low on sodium, should avoid saturated and trans-fats as well as keeping away from alcohol. Foods rich in vitamins should also be consumed in large amounts to support nerve health.
3. Relaxation Techniques
Relaxation is also effective in managing nerve pain. Patients who meditate and practice progressive relaxation have reported added relief from nerve pain. Some of the techniques used are yoga, tai chi and blend stretching, all of which have resulted in lower stress levels and improved posture. Stretching and yoga, especially, have produced incredible results towards alleviating nerve pain. A regular stretching routine strengthens muscles and increases the range of motion, which has been observed to reduce pain. Additionally, practices like strength training have been shown to reduce pain through increased strength, endurance, balance and flexibility. Some patients have also reported that warm compresses or warm baths have also resulted in reduced pain. They say that warm compresses help their muscles relax and, therefore, give them comfort and relief.
4. Alternative Medicine
Some patients with neuropathy turn to alternative medicine and they claim that it does help in alleviating nerve pain. Some of these practices include acupuncture, energy-based modalities, and chiropractic techniques. Acupuncture is the most preferred, and patients have reported increased relief after trying it, with a combination of other treatments. However, much is not known about these alternative treatments and while some patients have claimed success from the practices, little compelling evidence suggests their effectiveness.
