The Safdarjang Hospital, which is a 1,600 bed multi-specialty hospital, is one of the largest government hospitals in India. The hospital is centrally located just opposite the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on the Ring Road in New Delhi. The Safdarjung Hospital was the only tertiary care hospital in South Delhi till the starting of AIIMs.
The Safdarjung Hospital, which was founded in 1942 during the Second World War, acted as a Base Hospital for the Allied forces. The hospital is one of the largest, tertiary level, multi-disciplinary healthcare institutions in the country. The hospital not only provides medical care to lakhs of people of Delhi and the nearby states, but also for people of neighboring countries. The Safdarjung Hospital is a centre for training and teaching of postgraduate students since 1962 and it still continues to impart post-graduate training in various specialties and super specialties
