Fever in Children – Symptoms, Treatment, and Remedies
Fever in children is a common health issue. However, it is not as serious, but requires close attention regarding the cause and the treatment to be followed. Although no treatment is required for fever unless it is making your child uncomfortable, treatment becomes essential if the temperature goes beyond 102 degrees. As a first aid, just make sure that your child takes ample fluid and rest to avoid severe consequences like dehydration.
Some of the first aid treatment tips, if it is above 102 degrees but below 105 degrees, for fever in children are listed below:
- Sponge or bathe the child in lukewarm water to bring down the temperature. Avoid use of ice baths, cold water, or alcohol.
- Consult your paediatrician before giving any kind of medicine for fever.
- If your baby is under 2 months of age, do not give any medicine.
- Maintain the room temperature between 70 degrees F and 74 degrees F.
- Provide an extra blanket of your child has chills.
- Make your child comfortable in light cotton pajamas. Overdressing might cause trapping of body heat, thus creating a rise in the temperature.
- Avoid giving aspirin to your child for fever.
Remedies for Fever in Kids
High fever requires proper medication and treatment by an experienced paediatrician to check for infections and viral diseases. However, mild fever can be treated and controlled with the help of some natural home remedies. Some easy and effective ones include:
Apple Cider Vinegar is one of the most inexpensive and highly effective home remedies for fever in kids. The acid present in it draws the heat from the body, thus reducing the fever very quickly. Besides, it is packed with and replenishes minerals that get eliminated from the body due to high fever. As a remedy, add 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and a tablespoon of honey to a glass of lukewarm water. Give this to your child 2-3 times a day, but as fractions.
Basil is one of the most effective herbs to bring down the fever. The effect of basil is no less than any antibiotic available in the market. The healing properties of basil bring down the fever very quickly. Take 20 basil leaves and add a teaspoon of crushed ginger to a cup of water. Reduce the solution to half a cup. Add some honey and give this tea to your child 2-3 times a day. Remember, divide one cup into equal parts before serving to your child.
Ginger helps to expel heat from the body, thus reducing fever. Besides, ginger is also packed with antibacterial and antiviral properties. It helps the immune system to fight infections of all types. As a remedy, prepare ginger water by adding ½ a teaspoon of grated ginger to a cup of boiling water. Allow it to steep for a while. Add some honey and give this water to your child in fractions during the day.
Mint has certain cooling properties that keep the internal system cool thus reducing the body temperature. Besides, it also helps to extract excessive heat from the body. Add 1 tbsp of crushed mint leaves to a cup of hot water. Let it steep for about 10-15 minutes. Strain this mixture and add some honey to it. Give this to your child in fractions during the day to bring down the body temperature.
Turmeric has been a proven remedy not only for fever among but among kids as well. It is packed with antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial properties to fight off infections. Mix half a teaspoon of turmeric and 1/4th teaspoon of black pepper to a glass of warm milk. Give it to your child at least once a day to bring down the fever.
Raisins are great to fight infections and reduce fever. They are packed with phenolic phytonutrients that contain antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Moreover, raisins work as a tonic during fever. To treat fever, soak about 15-20 raisins in water and allow it to steep for an hour or until the raisins turn soft. Then, crush these soaked raisins in the water and strain the liquid. Add some lemon juice to this solution. Give this to your child, once a day, fore effective results.
Egg whites also work as an excellent remedy for fever. It is like a cooling gel that absorbs heat. You can obtain results within half an hour. It can pull the fever down from head to feet. Just break open 2-3 eggs and separate the yolk. Beat the egg white for a minute or two. Then, soak a thin handkerchief or paper towel in the egg white. Place this soaked cloth on the feet soles. Cover with socks to keep the soaked cloth piece in place. Replace the dried cloth with fresh ones. Repeat the remedy till you see a drop in the fever to a safe level.
