Psoriatic arthritis is usually a not-so-usual type of arthritis and affects only a few people who possess psoriasis. What Is Psoriatic Arthritis?
Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a health condition wherein a human suffers from sore and swollen joints of arthritis with psoriasis. Typically, psoriasis leads to scaly, itchy red patches on the scalp and the skin.
There are five different types of psoriatic arthritis;
1. Symmetric PsA
It affects the equivalent joints on both sides of the body, say for instance right and left knees. Symptoms are the same as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) but it is milder than RA and causes lesser joint deformities in comparison to RA. Nevertheless, symmetric PsA may be disabling.
2. Asymmetric PsA
It usually affects a joint or joints on only one side of the body. The joints could turn red alongside a sore feeling. It is normally mild and nearly 35% of PsA people are affected by this.
3. Distal Interphalangeal Predominant PsA
It affects the closest joints of nails which are called distal joints. Nearly 10% of PsA people complain of this condition.
4. Spondylitis PsA
It targets the spine and when this happens the spine from the neck to the lower back could be affected leading to painful movements. Legs, feet, hands, hips, and arms may even be affected.
5. Psoriatic Arthritis Mutilans
This is the most severe deforming PsA type. Nearly 5% of people with PsA tend to have this. It majorly affects feet and hands. It may even lead to pain in the lower back and neck.
Symptoms Of Psoriatic Arthritis
Swollen toes and fingers are the most common signs. At times, deformities and swelling of feet and hands may also be noticed.
Foot pain at the points where ligaments and tendons attach to the bones can also be noticed. For instance, at the heel’s back or in the sole.
A few people can also develop lower back pain known as spondylitis. Spondylitis, in general, leads to joints inflammation between the pelvis and spine.
Eye redness and pain, changes in nails, tiredness, and stiffness in mornings, and fatigue are also other symptoms.
Causes Of Psoriatic Arthritis
Psoriatic arthritis takes place when the immune system of the body starts to attack healthy tissues and cells. The nonstandard immune response leads to inflammation in the joints and also overproduces skin cells.
To date, results aren’t clear why the immune system attacks healthy cells and tissues, nevertheless, it is supposed that both environmental and genetic factors could cause this situation. The majority of the people with psoriatic arthritis also have a family history of either psoriatic arthritis or psoriasis.
Physical trauma or something in the natural environment — like bacterial or viral infection could lead to the triggering of psoriatic arthritis in persons with a hereditary tendency.
Foods To Avoid With Psoriatic Arthritis
Psoriatic arthritis diet plays a key role in managing the condition. One should know what to eat and what not to eat properly manage the condition. Here are the foods not to eat if you have psoriatic arthritis.
Red meat and processed meat substances are known to increase inflammation so don’t eat them. Eat chicken, nuts, beans, legumes, and lean fish instead of them.
2. Diary Products
Dairy food allergies and intolerances can activate the immune system leading to chronic inflammation that’s not so severe in the gut. Try almond, soy, coconut, hemp, flax, and other plant produced milk.
3. Processed Drinks And Foods
Processed drinks and foods can easily lead to inflammatory health conditions. So, avoid these and eat foods rich in omega-6 such as corn, sunflower, and peanuts. However, as studies have also found that these foods may even lead to inflammation it is better to keep a tap on the intake of these foods.
Foods To Eat With Psoriatic Arthritis
Anti-inflammatory omega-3s such as fatty fish (salmon and tuna), seaweed and algae, chia seeds, walnuts, and edamame.
High-antioxidant vegetables and fruits such as dark berries, dark, leafy greens, nuts, dark chocolate, dried ground spices, and a little bit of coffee and tea.
High-fiber whole grains such as corn, whole wheat, whole oats, wild and brown rice, and quinoa.
