About Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana

Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana or RSBY was launched by the Government of India in the year 2008. The basic purpose of this Yojana or scheme was to compensate the out-of-pocket (OOP) health expenses of workers (mainly working in the unorganized sector in India and classified as BPL or Below Poverty Line workers) and their family members. The two-fold objective of this scheme includes

• Providing financial protection to such people against catastrophic health costs by reducing OOP
• Improving the access of such people to quality healthcare

Some Of The Basic Details Regarding RSBY Launched In 2008 Include

• Every family below the poverty line who hold a valid ration card are eligible to may enroll under the scheme and avail the assured insurance benefits extended by the scheme
• INR 30 will be charged as a one-time registration fee from such people
• Up to a maximum of five members of a family, including the head of household, spouse and three dependent persons (children or parents) can be covered under the insurance scheme
• Under the scheme, each family (members as mentioned in the above point) is entitled to claim (cashless) in-patient medical care up to INR 30,000 per annum
• The hospitalization may be done in any of the impaneled hospitals (RSBY Hospital List of the particular state in which the family is in)
• Pre-existing ailments will be covered from the very first day of the enrolment
• Each family may also claim transport expenses of INR 100 per hospitalization subject to a maximum of INR 1000 per family per annum
